“A cat?” Travis stood over the box and peered inside.

Skye padded to him, tugged on his arm, waited until he backed up a few steps, and then planted herself firmly between him and the animal. “A very pregnant one.”

Her voice quivered. Did he scare her? That thought troubled him.

He took her in: damp hair, fresh scent, and wearing his denim shirt. God, she was sexy.

“Please, Travis,” she whispered, her gaze dropping to his mouth and just as swiftly to meet his eyes.

Hers were soft and pleading.

His heart clutched. He blew out a hot breath. “Just until the litter is born. You have to promise me you’ll find a home for her and them.”

“It may be six weeks,” she warned.

A sigh rumbled through him. “No naming them. You’ll get attached.”

“How can I not name them? They’ll be so soft and cuddly and irresistible.”

“Not to me.”

She nudged him in the belly. “They may grow on you.”

“Like you?” A smile twitched at the corner of his lips.

“There’s always hope.” But her look held confusion and questions.

That troubled him. “Skye.” He reached out and brushed back a damp tendril of her hair. He recalled his swift reactions to her wondering what he'd done to her this morning and later to Luke’s throwaway phrase. “You get under my skin. Is that good enough?”

It did bring a grin to her. “It’s a start.”

That smile was back and it did the strangest things to him. His blood thrummed in his veins as he took her in. With his index finger, he traced her skin where the V of the fabric revealed a hint of cleavage. “Nice shirt.”

She gasped. “I like it.”

He flicked at the top button. “Covers too much.”

Reaching up, she undid it. “Better?”

Travis trailed lower, barely skimming the edge of her bare breast with his knuckle. “Not even close.”

Hearing her swallow hard as she unfastened the next button sent a tiny thrill through him. “How’s that?”

This time he used his fingertips to rub lazy circles lower. She shivered under his touch. “Getting warmer.” That much was true.

Her hands shook as she unleashed the next one. “And now?”

He slid the back of his hand over her smooth skin. “Hotter.”

Skye trembled, undoing the last one that kept the fabric closed. She parted it farther, and then took his hand in hers, splaying his palm open and guiding him to touch her warm, silky skin. “Is this what you wanted?”

Everything in him pulsed. “You’re very good at this.”

“I can do even better.” Her sultry promise caused his heart to drum behind his ribs. Slowly, she guided his hand upward and allowed him to cup her plump breast.

It was his turn to suck in a sharp, aching breath.

Skye moaned.

Leaning close, Travis whispered in her ear, “I can match that and raise you.”

Her ragged breathing stopped for a second. Her fingertips brushed down his front and hovered somewhere south of his belt buckle. “I think I already did that to you.”
